Shalimar is 9.3 miles and about 16 minutes by road from our office, along East John Sims Parkway, SR 85 (Eglin Parkway) and 10th Avenue. The Town of Shalimar covers about a third of a square mile; it began in 1943 and 1944 as a planned community of 160 houses for Eglin Field officers and incorporated in June 1947. Lake Lorraine and the Poquito Bayou area carry Shalimar mailing addresses even though they sit outside the town.
Shalimar's housing comes in layers: about one home in ten dates to before 1950, from the officer-housing days, about half were built in the 1990s, and townhomes and newer houses fill in between. Many streets run toward Choctawhatchee Bay, Garnier's Bayou or Poquito Bayou, where damp air reaches hinges, bottom seals and track fasteners sooner.
Permits come in two steps. Okaloosa County's permit guide for the Town of Shalimar says building permits go to the town first, then to the county's Growth Management department, and it notes that only some addresses on streets such as Old Ferry Road are inside the town.

We come in on Eglin Parkway and work the streets named in the town's permit guide, such as Richbourg Avenue, Plew Avenue, Palm Shores Drive and Cherokee Road. Because Lake Lorraine, Port Dixie and Poquito Bayou have Shalimar mailing addresses but sit outside the town limits, we ask for the street address first and tell you whether the town and the county both need to sign off on a door replacement.
