Valparaiso sits 2.6 miles and about 7 minutes by road from our office at 750 E John Sims Pkwy. Incorporated in 1921, the city grew from James Plew's 1920s development, and Plew offered land beside its airfield for the 1935 bombing and gunnery base that became Eglin Air Force Base. The airport code VPS still comes from the city's name. Today it is mostly single-family homes on Boggy Bayou.
Valparaiso has some of the oldest housing nearby: nearly four in ten homes date to the 1950s and 1960s, and a little over half were built before 1980. A door from that era has had decades of damp bayou air on its hinges, track brackets and bottom edge. We check springs and cables first, then hinges, brackets and fasteners for rust.

From the office we take East John Sims Parkway (SR 20) west, then SR 85, Aurora Street and Valparaiso Parkway (SR 190), about 2.6 miles. When a caller cannot give a cross street we use Lincoln Park, T.J. Brooks Park and the Doolittle Memorial as anchors, then confirm the address on Lincoln Avenue, Nordberg Avenue or North Bayshore Drive before the truck rolls.
